Many parents want a name for their child that is familiar and won’t cause ridicule as they grow older. However, parents want their child to also feel unique. In fact, it has been suggested that a child whose name is at the top of the popularity poll may not feel as unique and special as a child whose name is less common. So what to do? Here are some ideas that might help to solve this conundrum.

One thing parents could do is to change the spelling of a common name into something more unusual. For example Jacob could become Jakob or Sally could become Salley. But be careful not to make it so unusual others are unable to pronounce it correctly.

Another idea is to combine names. You could combine your name with a relative’s name or just names that you like. If your name is Mary and your sister’s name is Ann, you have Maryann. Maybe you like John and Carl. Then you could have John-Carl. Be sure not to make it too silly or complicated.

A third idea is to use an ethnic variation. One of the most common names for many years has been Michael. But what about using Mikhail, Miguel, or Micha? You could choose an ethnic variation that reflects your own heritage or one that you just like.

In the end parents should choose a name that they feel is right for their child. Obviously, there are many ways to do this including making more popular names into something unique.
