5 Steps for Naming Your Baby

Congratulations! You’re having a baby. Now, with everything else you have to do you need to give your baby a name. But how to decide? Here are 5 steps to finding just the right name. Good luck!

1. Make a list. Start with names you like but keep an open mind and include others you might not like as much. Don’t forget suggestions from family and friends. Sometimes great ideas come from other places. Update your list and divide into categories.

2. Think about honoring family members. You don’t need to feel obliged but naming your child after family is a nice way to show appreciation. Be sure to check with family members ahead of time to avoid any possible conflicts.

3. Remember the middle and last names too. Write the names all together to see how they look and sound. Sometimes a terrific first name doesn’t go with the other names.Make sure the entire name goes together.

4. Think about if you want a popular name or something more original. Popular names are safe and will probably not cause trouble for you child in the future. However, an original name can make one feel special and interesting.

What about nicknames? Many names are shortened or altered by friend and family. William might be turned into Bill. Think about whether or not the nicknames are something you like.

Finally, go with what you feel is right. If it’s something you like go with it.
